I only got 15. I think not being a lift served skier may have cost me.

Re: Are You a Retro-Skier Quiz!
Imagine I'm making a lovingly fun, sarcastic tone when I say: When I go out on leathers, I'm being "retro". If you are going out in leather boots that you bought in "87 and have been using since, you're a guy with very old gear. I'm new to the forum but I think both people are here. I feel like using wooden skis is actually a historical reenactment at this point
If anyone's still skiing wood skis with long thongs on a one-seat chairlift I'd eat my pom-pom hat but that sure sounds like retro-style fun. To be "retro" one must go back in time, not just still be there -in my opinion

I'm so retro I didn't want to give out my name and email!
Edit:
Well, what a surprise. 42 points and on everyone's spam list, now!

[throwaway name] and [throwaway name]@retro-skiing.com worked for me. I think it's mainly an anti-bot thing.Montana St Alum wrote: ↑Tue Feb 21, 2023 12:49 pmI'm so retro I didn't want to give out my name and email!

BTW, were you surprised that the Nigerian Prince was into telemark?
I'd take a spin on wooden skis, with or without metal edges. Can't be much worse than K2 WorkStinx with leather lace up boots (wide ski + flexy boot = hard to get edges to bite).

Mad River's single chair is a hold out in the U.S. and while it would have been cheaper to go to a 2-person when they had to service it, they collected enough to keep it a single.

Re: Are You a Retro-Skier Quiz!
I scored 20 points, so I’m only retro with an asterisk! I didn’t start skiing until after high school, so no Cubco bindings, no wood skis yet either!
I went to the ski hill Saturday, with lace up leathers through. The 20 year olds I shared a chair ride with sure thought I was retro! It was sunny, 35 F, I didn’t have a hat and skied in sunglasses. They thought that was totally retro, the one guy was dumping his helmet in the car and grabbing sunglasses. He said when he got done skiing he was going to tell his Dad he learned something from an elder!
So, I guess I had that 10 seconds of old guy cool!

Oh yeah, I'm up there, too, but never skied Cubcos, or Look Nevadas, since I was making attempts at teleskiing in my Vasque leather 3 pin boots, Snabb bindings, Fischer E77s and Asnes Tur-Langrens at the time...so didn't score the higher points.

If they'd asked me about Silvretta bindings, gaiters and $12 "glacier glasses" I might have been able to eke out a score of 44!
Actually, when I started skiing, Nigeria was only a year old.

Re: Are You a Retro-Skier Quiz!
My wife got a 24, but I think the quiz is more about how long you have been skiing -- better questions would be about what you ski on now.
(And somebody here will make a quiz up for tele, right?)

Re: Are You a Retro-Skier Quiz!
I got 36. I think I lost a lot of points because I answered yes to things like: one piece racing suits. riding the single chair at Mad River WITH woolen army poncho should have been worth 20 points. not sure if they still hand out those ponchos or not.
a few more questions:
1. did you ever use canning paraffin to wax your skis...because thats the only wax you had? (( yes, my dads idea)
2. did you ever carry spare "ski tips" that slid onto your wooden ski after your snapped the tip off? ( duh, of course)
3. did you ever use old woolen socks as "over boots" for your nordic ski boots( yup, another idea from dad)
4. did you eve line your boots with old loaf bread bags to keep your socks dry ( yup, that was kid thing in VT)
5. did you ever use poles made from bamboo? did they have baskets the size of dinner plates? ( of course)
6. when you hit the local trail and saw that a snowmobile had already been there, did you get excited because it had been "groomed" ( yup, even better when frozen)
7. did you ever wear women's nylons because you "heard they were warm"(yup, need to be old enough to remember life before Smartwool. Poypropeline , etc)
8. did you ever go ski jumping in a football helmet with the face guard removed because thats what you had? ( yup)
9. did you ever build a wooden ski box for the roof of your car? ( shop class in middle school. predates Thule/Yakima versions)
10. do you normally carry more than 3 Voile straps with you...because stuff breaks?
11. bonus: when you see a bait and tackle shop, do you understand that it contains endless possibilities for fixing broken ski boots?
