There’s a pair for sale nearby for not much money. If the title equation holds true I’ll be picking them up!

Wish I had the expertise to answer that. I recently found some europa 99s at a garage sale recently and couldn't pass them up. I have always used kickwax or skins in offtrail conditions, and wanted something I could "grab and go". I was somewhat concerned that the fishscales on these, along with a very long "wax pocket" and a very soft flex would lead to a slow ski.
Upon pulling off the bindings, I find they are 195 . I had guessed them at 200 or even 205. 65/55/60,which seems similar to most E99.
Some good info on another thread here-Unapogetic love note to the fischer E99
I gave only $30. for the skis, will put an old set of rottefella st bindings on them and hope for the best. If nothing else, a rock ski or something to bum around on in crappy snow conditions.

The E99 is the renamed Europa 99. About 25 years ago?

For $15 and just a few miles away, how can I not at least check them out?

If you can get an e99 without scales, do it. They are a NORDIC Cross Country ski, and they do that deed in an outstanding way. If you learn how to turn them then you're in for a thrill. They cruise wicked and I have never had such a wonderful feeling arc on any other bc ski. It takes time and learning, is a process. Have a blast! TM

They are actually
$85 which seems a little steep for a ski older than some of the people I work with.

Depends entirely on their condition. A waxable E99 wasn’t an inexpensive ski back in the day.
Rarely used, put away in a cool dry place with a topcoat of wax in a breathable ski bag, any old ski would be like new. Retain camber, stiffness etc. Even a ski that was used a lot on good snow, well maintained (waxed, brushed, tuned)m and properly stored etc. would be a steal at $85.
If skied on gravel, put away wet, and stored in a garage or shed, an E99 (or any other ski) wouldn’t be worth squat.

Not necessarily. For one, wooden skis need to be stored properly blocked. Secondly, foam core skis will degrade over time. I don't know what the Europa 99 was made of, so no help. If it's not foam, wasn't beat to hell, is the scale-less variety, and was stored properly per Manney, it's still a good deal.
Heck, if they're not scaled and are 190-200 and in good shape I might say pick em up and sell em to me along with your Svartisens, haha.

I agree with Manney. And what about the bindings? If the ski is in good condition and has bindings that are compatible with your needs, sounds like a good deal to me.
