The author’s definition ls traditional skiing is appealing…

https://scricfinia.wordpress.com/2018/0 ... ng-is-fun/

This is what classic XC should be, not its current interpretation which uses skis completely unsuited to crossing uncompressed, ungroomed snow.

Companies today are “selling” an interpretation of World Cup-level DH and XC that has no functional capacity. They’re doing this by pushing “performance gear” that can only work in controlled conditions.

The whole idea of groomed surfaces in competition was to level the playing field for successive runs or those following in trail so *the athlete* could be fairly judged. Was it artificial? Sure. But the point was competition between athletes, not making things “easier” for the amateur or wanna be pro.

Things like the Championship brings the functional nature of skiing back into focus. And that’s a good thing for skiing, Such pursuits, no matter the distance or duration, will make us better skiers… as long as there is enough elevation change to make it something other than flat earth worship.

Well said.
I prefer to avoid excessive commercialism and not be tricked by it.

On the other forum there was a brief thread proposing a sort of xcd race. Would love to see something like this Finnish event locally.

An event like that would kill me. Ha ha. Would be really hard, even in teams with alternating trail breaking.

Saw a thread earlier in the year. Don’t know if it was you or somebody else. Going grocery shopping by ski… skis in the shopping cart. THAT was great. Integrating life’s chores and skiing. One of the best reasons to own skis… independence from things like roads or snow plows. Real mobility.
