Trimming climbing skins

Any advice on trimming thick climbing skins? Methods, frustrations, etc.?

I have only had to trim skin for length until now. I have to take 10mm or 12mm off of the side of an Ebay rug (the $20 Ascension skins) to fit the 50mm waist on my new skis. They are for the Fischer Traverse 78.

The Ascension skins have a flexible tip-mount coupled with a rigid tail-mount (ski-end hook). Last season I had the same type of skins on my Fischer 88s, they only popped off twice, lost one on a pass, luckily pass was right above the hut I slept in so went on needle/haystack mission the next day and found it barely sticking out of the new snow.

Will the increased camber of the 78 effect the skin staying attached to the ski? Should I just lose the tail clip?

Tail clips are good if you are taking the skins on and off a lot. Inevitably the glue side of the skin will get wet and it won't stick as well. The tail clip will keep it on there even if it starts to peel off a bit. If you never take the skins off, there isn't a chance for the glue side to get wet.

Thanks for the advice. I ordered new skis/bindings today and I asked the shop if they had an extra skin-trimming tool hanging around. They do- a G3 skin-cutter, and they are tossing one in the box for me, free of charge. Should work better than my pizza cutter.

My tail clips popped off several times last season. I followed the Ascension mounting instructions for the flexible tip attachment to the letter. This time I guess I will have to make that tip attachment somewhat tighter than they recommend.
