I'm determined to search out a ski that Ive been wanting for awhile. When I first wanted a ski like this there were several current(or recently retired) options, now I think there is only one current???

205-210cm
Full or 3/4 metal edge
high 40's to low 50's waist
Waxable! Not a skin ski and not a crown ski.

Only ski I know that is 'maybe' still be produced is the Asnes Mountain Race 48. The skin version seems the most 'readily' available.

Ive been searching the internet for nos or lightly used skis. Ski's Ive been looking for Transnordic tour? Karhu xcd(I believe those have something like a 60 waist, wider than I want).

Anyone else know of a ski still currently produced Im missing? Any other recently retired skis I should be watching for?

Karhu XCD GT are 62 54 59. I have recently ski them back to back with MR48 and thought the MR48 miles better for touring. I did feel like I could probably eek out turns on the xcd gt with some effort, the mr48s would be real tough. Not sure what your use will be

I know nothing about the MR48's, but have skied xcd-gt's for around 30 years or so (still do); I think they turn nicely for a ski in that category.

Thanks, thats exactly what I was wondering. These skis will be for long days along ‘semi groomed’ roads and trails. So Im not really looking for turny. Just want metal edges just to help survive the frozen crust and help provide a survival snowplow when needed.

You have the skin or wax mr48s?

the MR48 is in-stock and available at the Norseman (Calgary).
(both skin and wax versions)
and they ship to the USA, quite reasonably I might add.

Just received a 210 (wax) set in the mail, on Monday.

I have 210 wax mr48s for days like what you described, and I have 190 mr48 skins that I bought by error but it turned out I really like them for bush bashing in marginal conditions. I'm 200 to 220 lbs depending on what I ate that day, and 6ft. I'd get 200cm skins if I did it over again, happy with the 210 wax

There is a nice set of E99 waxable on Teleturnaround ...look for posting " A few items for Sale"

I own an MT 51, which should be reasonably similar to a MR 48. That would be Mountain Tour versus Mountain Race. I had a member here give me a good deal, and I only use it for tracks or thin cover. I use it for a similar use the OP posted, with the exception that I’m in Michigan, my ups and downs are short, 100 feet of vertical, but there’s lots of ups and downs, and it can be steep and twisty.
My Gamme 54 is far more fun to ski. It’s faster, and it turns way better. It’s a great ski. The MT 51 isn’t. The MR 48 would have to be a lot better ski than the MT 51 to be near as much fun.
The Gamme does not like tracks. It fits in tracks, but the full metal edges on a stiff tips doesn’t play nice with tracks. It’s a great ski, and if you like to go fast you will like it. The Gamme has a little rocker, not much, but all you need, and really all you want. Gamme will turn, but you’re not bending it underfoot on a firm trail.

What bindings did you mount? Im going back and forth. I like the added control of the nnnbc but the adjustable of a plate binding is so nice…
