Repair/frankenbinding Riva cable?

Post by BEVL » Thu Feb 27, 2025 1:11 pm

Got these skis off kijiji recently and was really hoping to get out skiing them next week (new to telemark and just upgraded from xc skis to these + scarpa T1s) however when I was messing with the cable this nut suddenly seized and I haven't been able to move it despite all the finger+plier strength I could muster. Anyone have ideas to fix/cobble together a repair for this? I was thinking of carefully using a Drexel to cut off the nut then replacing it with a regular hex nut if I can find one that fits. The bindings are Rivas with the side heel throw.
Knowledge is fun!

Did you try some light oil on the threads? Might oil it, let it sit overnight, then try again.
You could also email or call Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder, CO; their ski repair shop sometimes has replacement parts for older bindings--yours, however, are very very old.
Finally you might try to find another used pair of bindings on fleabay, for parts.

I have a spare cable for that binding, but not the nut (surprised it's that frozen). You can have it if you still need one.

It wouldn’t take much heat to warm that nut up enough to draw oil inside the nut. I buy PB Blaster locally.

Low flame, heat the nut, squirt oil both sides. A little more heat. I would try to turn it hot. You could let it sit, even overnight.
I have had fittings not come apart, at least in operable condition.
Those fittings look clean, odds should be good you can turn them.

Looks like the threaded section is slightly bent, I wonder if that's part, or all of the problem? Otherwise fisheater's method should work.
