So what is current thinking on ski length for tele racing? If I go with a slalom ski is a 165-170cm ski enough? Or should I stick with a GS ski in the 170-180cm range. I am 6' and 185lbs.

Also, I was wondering about poles. I see the pro guys using x-c poles. What length is common. It looks to be in between traditional downhill and x-c length. thanks...

There are two standard events, GS and Classic as far as points goes. Otherwise there can be slalom, moguls, etc. The GS is the same as alpine but may have a jump and even be a dual race. Use whatever skis and poles make you happy going fast.

The Classic has everything possible on skis and is different in every venue but has a required jump, rap (tight banked turn) and a large component of skating, which is where the long poles come in. Consider slightly shorter GS, perhaps women's flex or beer league (sidecut) masters race skis or frontside carvers and pretty much an alpine boot position. Saving weight on your feet is a big deal because of the long skate but don't go so short your ski feels squirrelly on the landings. You want to feel confident in your skis. Have fun!
