More Bikes

With the advent of e-bikes I've been seeing a lot more bike traffic on long approach hikes. Even some popular hiking trails are slowly becoming mtb objectives. I figure if you can't beat em join them. I've been beefing up my 15 year old surly cross check with bigger tires etc but I find it's not enough. I have a clapped out norco fluid full suspension but never really liked the trail bike for longer approaches with mud sections, erosion, horse traffic etc.
Been thinking about a 27.5+ or 29+ build for the winter down time, maybe a Surly Krampus or Karate Monkey, whichever I can find used or discounted really. Some of the closed for winter Highways around here have been trackset for fat tires the previous couple of winters allowing access deeper into the backcountry. Not sure how much faster travel is on a fat tire bike than a light touring setup? I guess what I'm thinking is taking the "hike and bike" setup to the winter for skiing. I'm sure an actual fat bike would be more appropriate but i don't think I can justify having one sitting around getting no use all summer. Anyways, just thinking bout bikes, my ski quiver is pretty dialed

I ride a DRZ400s. Motor vehicle restrictions everywhere I ski and hike. Which for some reason don't apply to E-bikes.

cool, DRZ is a nice bike ... i dislike the evs on trails, i can never hear them zipping by until they're on top of you, had a couple near misses in the past covid years when everyone was outside loosing thier shit .. I wish the ev dorks would install a few playing cards into the spokes of the wheels, just for the heads up

For traveling to the BC snow, I'd suggest an ebike with at least a 4.0 wide tires. Your butt will thank you. Mine has a throttle it's the tits for moving over rough terrain.

I've had the same experience quite a few times, all they'd need is an actual good quality Rear hub (hope, chris king, industry nine). Any high end rear hub is gonna make a nice Zzzzzzzzzzz noise you'd hear from a good distance away. Strange that people pay 5 to 10k for a bike with a 30 dollar hub, imo. Tbh though I'm just more jealous than anything that I can't afford one myself. It's quite the opportunity to be able to legally rip up provincial and national parks on motor vehicles:/. I doubt it will last though

I have 2 ebikes but not fat tired as they don't suit my needs. Wife rides a hard tail bike from REI that was on sale for $900 and mine is a $700 hard tail Chinese from Amazon with 27 wheels.
50 paces from the house I've got this. Runs for 280 miles. Batteries only last for 40 0r so.

Nice to have that so close to you wooley12.
Reminds me of a reclaimed rail bed that stretches from Salmo to Nelson in the Kootenays. The last 10 km near Salmo is the kind of area you’d expect to hear banjos playing. Its only 48 km long, if we get the snow that is being talked about I’d be up for putting the Metsäs on and cruising it after a fresh snowfall.
