Hey Johnny-
What are your thoughts on the Asnes scales versus Fischer's Off-track Crown?
Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

They are both very nice. To me it seems like the Asnes scales are smoother, offering a slightly better glide, while the Offtrack offers a tad more grip... But it's hard to tell for me since my Ingstad and Nansen WLs are much narrower than my Offtrack skis...

I originally regretted getting Ingstads with a waxless base but they grew on me and I'm very happy I have them.

I gave my smooth Ingstads to Lilcliffy two years ago... I stick to the WL ones now and couldn't be happier...
The Magik Å pattern is amazing, perfect grip and glide even on cold snow... Happiness is a pair of waxless Asnes skis...

So these Asnes skis from the 90's just popped up on ebay last week... VERY coooool...!

After all these years, did I finally find that mythic and legendery super-rare Asnes Waxless pattern that Ben once saw in a shop in Norway?!? Could it be?!

J, very cool! Did you pick up the Quests?

That might very well be the pattern I saw on those Asnes Amundsen back in 2008 or so.

I might add that I am conscious you proved me wrong about that artistic organic free form waxless pattern that can be found on some older Asnes skis. Man was I surprised when Crister confirmed.

I did not buy the Quests... My storage capacity is already over, over busted. Oh, it wouldn't be impossible to store a few more pairs in the bathroom, but humidity level is too high in there...

Also found on ebay, the old, original AAA waxless pattern, also known as the AsnesAsnesAsnes pattern...

AAAwesone find! It would be fascinating to place all these partterns on a timeline and see how things evolved &what went the way of the dodo. That checkered pattern looks kind of a rough ride

After getting the first 40 or so miles on my waxless Ingstads, I think I have an opinion here.

The Asnes scales can work as well as the scales on my Fischer and Alpina skis, but only if I carefully place the ski so the fishscales match up with bumps in bumpy trails, and I carefully weight the fishscales while kicking. In other words, I get the same amount of grip I get from Fischer or Alpina fishscales, but it takes more work with the Asnes fishscales.

I think Asnes could do with a change to their fishscales, extending the deep fishscales all the way to the X-skin attachment point, have the A letters at the X-skin point, and then, depending on the length of the ski, 6-12cm of shallow fishscales in front of that.

That might make the fishscales a lot more forgiving grip wise, hopefully without enough impact on glide to really be noticeable. If Asnes people are reading, I would not mind being involved in tests, and would be able to share the same testing skis with Wooderson, who lives in the same city :)

FWIW I weigh 210lbs and have the 205 length Ingstad skis.
