Awesome photo-blog!! I've been to the start and finish of your trip. Now I know what's inbetween! Inspiring! Especially since it's a wilderness trip in the lower 48. Spent a lot of time in the Lochsa/Selway area. Beautiful!

@mikesee -great looking trip - can you say a little more about the choices of 3-pins/Koms versus AT/Objectives, since you did parts of the trip on each? and about the boots you used for each setup? Thanks!

I used the same boots -- Excursions -- with both ski setups.

I had 3-pin bindings on the 174 Kom's and 178 Objectives. I carried cables/springs with me the whole trip, but never used them that I can remember.

Both sets of skis were too long for me, when driven with those flimsy boots, and when hauling the heavy loads that we were.

I made the mistake of listening to too many opinions around this forum when buying my skis last winter. I didn't yet understand that this is a mis-named nordic skiing discussion group, not a tele skiing group. There are a very few exceptions to that statement, but not enough to justify keeping the TT forum name IMO.

I have since divested myself of both of those sets of skis, and replaced them with 162 Kom's and 163 V6 BC's. Much more control now, plenty of float, plenty of glide.

I still use the Excursions for local kick and glide sessions out the front door. But when carrying a heavy pack and/or making turns in the mountains, I leave those soft, comfy, flexy boots at home and use either Scarpa F1's or F3's instead.
