You may ask yourself, what kind of freak has a pole rack at home? Well... I do! 8-)

I have a few pairs of skinnies... Karhu XCD GT, Glittertinds, my new Artis wood skis and some old Tempo XC skis with metal edges... I will need a few pairs of NNN/BC bindings to put on those for the 2016 season... But hey, skinnies or not, it's still 3-pin mania here...!

Wow, what a collection!
If I had one like that, I could hardly justify myself in front of my family hanging in suspicion. :)

That's why you need a cave where your family is not allowed to go... 8-)

I probably paid less for all my old skis than the price of one of your super-cool fischer skis...!

I've yet to pay even close to full price even for a new pair of skis.

With the advent of the internet and a long off season, I just check the prices every couple weeks.

I was able to buy all my skis, new, for what I consider fairly cheap. Would have been cheaper to buy used but I've yet to actually find a good deal on ski I want in the size I want. Most of the ones I see that I have any interest in they are asking way too much.

Living in the north east, both downhill and xc skiing are fairly popular. It's rare that you'd find a set of metal edge xc skis in someones garage but I suppose they are out there.

I'm in cahoots with an outdoor club in my city's school district (my wife is a teacher). I've really been itching to get those kids on skis. I had the idea of literally going door to door in the 'rich', suburban neighborhoods where I know there are literally hundreds of pairs of xc skis rotting in peoples garages, most of which wouldn't even be worth $25 on eBay. I'd like to scoop those up and get them to the city kids, most of whom don't even know what a ski looks like. Problem I'm having now is finding a place to store this stuff. The football team seems to get priority on gear storage...

Sorry for the drift... the idea of cheap or donated skis got me thinking about that again.

Good stuff is very hard to find here too... Unless you like Black Diamond and Rossignol "S" skis, which will never count as "good stuff" to me... I get most of my gear on Ebay during the summer... But hey, all my skis are too short for me, and all my boots are too big... That's the thing about used gear... You get what's available...

Hummm, that door to door thing to get skis for kids is a very, very cool idea... TelemarkTalk.com would totally sponsor this... 8-)

Hummm, I should talk to the wife about doing this locally... That sure would allow a lot of local kids to try the sport... And save all those great old skis from disappearing...!

Right?

Where do they go? Garage sales? Donations (donated to who)? Dumpsters?

XC skis rarely die. Most just get old and retire to the garage or basement.

The idea I had was to make them available to kids in the outdoor club for free, whenever they want to use them. Like I say though, problem is storage, and someone keeping track of them. I figured a collateral trade would be a good system to make sure they come back.

Our 'rich' schools actually have xc ski teams around here but you have to be privileged for that.

My thought has been to instill in teens the knowledge about public land, and what you can do on public land for very little money, or most of the time free. It surprises me the number of people who don't understand public land or that it exists. Anyway... teach a man to fish so to speak...

Living in a small ski town, I know that a lot of local kids will never be able to afford skiing. Of course they all dream about snowboarding, but turning them into XC could be really cool. Gear is cheap, and you can go anywhere for free. You can start skiing straight from your house in town and go out for hours, exploring a very large territory. For free. That's another reason why I'm so in love with XCD...

Sadly, I'm the only freak in town who does his errands on ski... It's funny because the guys from our local coffee shop install a "decorative" ski rack outside every year. And I actually use it... 8-)

I dream of the day when I can ski to work...

Shortly I'll be getting up at 5:30am, strapping on my headlamp and skiing a few miles before work. And on others I'll strap on my headlamp after work.\

The only thing better than skiing... skiing for free!*

*I can safely say that makes any of my favorite things better.
