The end of Voile's 3p binding - RIP
Re: The end of Voile's 3p binding - RIP
If you think by giving accurate information about current products I've used is trolling then you really have your priorities and definitions mixed up.
I really don't care that you are wrong, but please don't give out incorrect information because you're upset or confused. Some people may actually find what is written here useful and helpful.
If you have a problem with those Alpina boots and bindings feel free to pm Johnny and ask him about it. He obviously has the same boots and the same issues. In fact I never even realized it until I read his post. I'm pretty happy he pointed it out so I didn't ruin my boots. At least on the third detent there is some slight clamping to take some load off the pins, which were indeed starting to get elongated on my boots.

BTW, another way to tighten up your very strange boots might be to use a couple of ice tape layers..

Really? Quit being an idiot.
Those boots and bindings are obviously different than what we are talking about. But you'll never get that.
It's so funny that you think other things in the world don't apply or exist out of your little bubble.

Hey Johnny! Guess what?
We were wrong all along. Our boots and the Voile bindings work perfectly together because Ron said so!
I'm not sure why you wasted your time posting all that stuff about it?
It's so funny because even the Voile Rep said otherwise... I can't figure out how they could be so stoooopid... we couldn't have any correct and current information on YOUR forum could we Ronnie?

Mike,
My 2175's are a couple years old..From every pic on the web I can find, it's rather apparent that Alpina is pumping out the same soles for all 3 offerings of their 75mm "BC"/XCD boots..
But let's assume ( due to very poor quality controls) there are some running 15mm and some less, even down to 13mm..a 2mm difference , correct ? Is that not a 2mm difference ? and that converts to apprx .08 inches..Trivial to fix..
Anecdotally, I get 3clicks without anti-ice tape and 2 with..Perhaps some tape ??
The Voile rep, simply said the bindings are no longer made to suit DB's less than 15mm..That's not the same as telling you what the dimensions of Alpina XCD boots are and whether there are some manufacturing variances..

Re: The end of Voile's 3p binding - RIP
It's amazing that you can measure a picture on the web.
Highly unlikely it is quality control when I have 3 confirmed pairs that all measure 15mm. My wife's, mine and Johnny's.
It is also highly suspicious that a Voile Rep TOLD Johnny that their info on the website was incorrect and they changed the design a few years back to make the bail height higher.
I measure ~15mm height on all 4 pairs of HD mountaineers I have and 1 pair of cables. All of which were purchased in the last 2 years. All of my HD's are anodized RED on the aluminum base, and BLUE on the Cables. The bails all have a hammer paint finish and are all steel.
If yours don't look exactly like that, then they are probably the old style which would probably go down to less than 13mm on the bail.
Why don't you measure your duckbill on your Alpina boots and the height of the lowest setting on your bail?

Re: The end of Voile's 3p binding - RIP
It is possible my Voile 3pc bindings all fell just before the change..That I cannot say for sure..
And it's also possible that Alpina decided to save 2cents per/pair and had the duckbills thinned a couple years back..
But the 2175's I have still fit the new pair of 3pinHW's I bought last year , which are def made to accomodate larger duckbills !! It takes a lot of pressure to get this 3rd setting..
And no, I have no intention of skiing this setup..
Boots and bindings both could have been changed of course

Re: The end of Voile's 3p binding - RIP
Pretty sure those HW's are the correct vintage, but I really don't know if the anodizing tells anything.
All I know is the ones in the picture are problematic and they measure 15mm at the lowest setting. My cables are brand new and they measure the exact same.
Because of the slight rocker in my boots, it is a bit tricky to tell how much compression you are getting. If I stand flat footed and go two clicks it feels like the boot is locked down. If I do that on a bench and rock the boot forward it's loose in the binding. If I go to three clicks it feels tight, but I don't think it's actually compressing the bill much. There are witness marks on the top of the bill but rubber is very soft, so even a slight bit of compression isn't holding you in very well.
2mm variance on a mold is a mile. It's also a lot of interference, even for rubber.
And FWIW my Crispi soles are Vibram of the EXACT same design and tread pattern but the bill is thicker (18mm). I'm pretty sure the bill on the Alaska (and possibly 1575) of recent years is intentionally thin.
The Crispi Svartisen boots are nice and tight on the second detent and would be really hard to get to the third click.
So it's really a combination of the boot and the binding.
Re: The end of Voile's 3p binding - RIP
The 2175's I have have DB's apprx 5/8 in thick..conversion of 15mm (15.8 so 15 is erring on the conservative side) ..Really hard to accurately measure, but that's close..
I have 1 new pair of HW's with tape and one without..the tape does make a discernible difference ..
My best guess is someone had the Alpina's shaved going back a couple years..about the same time Voile changed the pins..
