Re: Asnes Mountain Race 48 SKIN
I find myself curious as to how these skis perform when it’s wettish out there. It’s been a mixture of rain and snow here in S.E. BC with temperatures above 0C. I can make Gamme work pretty good to about 0C (like it was yesterday) but todays 5C was a pain in the backside (didn’t feel like messing with klister). Does the MR48 skin perform okay in these conditions?

Re: Asnes Mountain Race 48 SKIN
I don't have the MR48 but I do have the Madshus M50 (very similar) and the Gamme. I use the X-Skin on the Gamme when it's warm and I find when it's really wet my skins, either the kickers on the Gamme or the integrated skins on the M50, get soaked but they still work. I've yet to have a problem with clumping. When you have recessed skins or a kick skin like on the Gamme but as long as the ski has a good camber, it's a good warm weather option. Yes scales work well then too, but the damn skins just always work.Inspiredcapers wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 10:38 pmI find myself curious as to how these skis perform when it’s wettish out there. They work just fine. I’ve used them in spring conditions but I always use liquid skin wax to keep the skins water proof.Inspiredcapers wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 10:38 pmI find myself curious as to how these skis perform when it’s wettish out there. Re: Asnes Mountain Race 48 SKIN
Hey Wabene, thanks for the feedback. I do have skins for the Gammes and they work okay, just don’t want to abuse them too much…that and the dust from the local mines tends to get onto the skin’s adhesive and make them less effective (as in losing their adhesiveness). I’m just contemplating getting a ski with a built in skin (such as the 48) dedicated to conditions such as I encountered today.
beeewee, that was going to be another one of my questions- what kind of liquid skin wax seems most effective…

Re: Asnes Mountain Race 48 SKIN
This is what I've used on my skins Maybe this is why I've never had clumping. I bought a lot of it and soak the skin generously and rub it in with the Fiberlene. It does seem thin to me and my skins have soaked so I wonder if something thicker would be better. When I finally use up the Swix, I'm going to try something like thisInspiredcapers wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 1:25 amHey Wabene, thanks for the feedback. I'm also open to other suggestions. Also @Inspiredcapers I wouldn't worry about using the skins hard. I have 2 years of hard use on my M50's and the skins are still good. With kicker skins like the X-Skin, if they are well attached, nothing can get under them to foul the glue. Swiss makes a spray skin cleaner, but I stopped using that since their thin skin care cleaned them well enough while it was applied.
Re: Asnes Mountain Race 48 SKIN
@wabene I’ve been using the Rode Skin Care Kit with Skin Wax and Skin Clean.
It glides well in the cold, at least on Mohair, and never clumps in any temperature I’ve skied in last season, from -26C to + 5C

Man, just when I think “Ok, I’m set, this is good, I don’t need or want any more skis,” some post from years ago worms its way into my consciousness (what little there is of it), and insidiously whispers “You want this ski, you need this ski, there is a hole in that pile of skis you have, and this ski will fill it!”Woodserson wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 8:58 amAll of a sudden I woke up this morning and I realized that I NEED this ski

Re: Asnes Mountain Race 48 SKIN
These are the conditions these skis are made for, I think. They slide better in the wet stuff than they do on hard ice, more approximating grip wax. Good also in big fat fresh wet snowflakes with a little Pomoca warm wax crayoned on.Inspiredcapers wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 10:38 pmI find myself curious as to how these skis perform when it’s wettish out there. This, and the fact you can literally just pick them up and head out when it's at freezing/ a couple of degrees above freezing, without looking at the thermometer, made them pretty alluring, I have to say.
(Full disclosure, I actually sold mine a couple of seasons ago, but my wife has a pair and really likes them in difficult/ spring conditions, even out in what I'd consider 'wilder' territory).

Re: Asnes Mountain Race 48 SKIN
I have two pairs of MR48s now and they are awesome! (No SKIN though, I have one skin ski, a Fischer Power, that's enough)Stephen wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 2:10 pmMan, just when I think “Ok, I’m set, this is good, I don’t need or want any more skis,” some post from years ago worms its way into my consciousness (what little there is of it), and insidiously whispers “You want this ski, you need this ski, there is a hole in that pile of skis you have, and this ski will fill it!”Woodserson wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 8:58 amAll of a sudden I woke up this morning and I realized that I NEED this ski

Re: Asnes Mountain Race 48 SKIN
Thanks everyone for the replies. I think this is the way to go when I hit the kind of spring conditions that I don’t want to spend too much time messing with Gamme trying to get the wax/skins right for changing conditions.
Musk Ox had me at “ These are the conditions these skis are made for, I think. They slide better in the wet stuff than they do on hard ice, more approximating grip wax.”, that’s exactly what I was looking for.
People get a kick out of seeing me take off on the Harley
(maybe a Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE this coming spring) with my skis and boots strapped on when spring is coming but I’m still in denial that ski season is over…hopefully the MR48 skin gives me a little more denial time.
I kick myself in the ass for not getting the MR48 waxable when they were still available, I would’ve liked to try those out.
