Rub on Wax review
Rub on Wax review
Howdy,
Just want to do a quick review on some of the rub on waxes I’ve tried for my fish scales and tip and tails.
Swix F4 Liquid - Easy to apply. Glides well in most conditions. Almost too slick climbing more condensed snow. Doesn’t last very long. Issues with snow globbing in spring wet snow.
Toko Liquid - Same as performance as Swix
Swix Paste - Less mess than swix liquid. Seems to last a little longer than Swix/Toko liquid. Still have issues in spring wet snow with globbing on scales.
Dominator Butter - Floro based, USA made. For wet snow in spring conditions. Extremely durable and lasts all day. No issues with globbing in super wet snow. The perfect spring tour rub on wax. Downside expensive, and harder to find. Great glide.
Dominator Race Rocket - Temp based rub on floro wax. One bar for warmer snow and another for colder snow. Lasts all day. No real cons. Holds up in spring snow conditions, not as quick as dominator butter in very wet snow. Similar glide as Toko/Swix liquid.
Dominator Eco - Same as rocket. Not as quick in wetter snow as rocket. Non floro based.

Re: Rub on Wax review
I also use Swix F4 liquid on my fishscales. It seems to work well when it's needed, which is mostly when we have wet spring snow. On days like that, I avoid globbing by applying 3-4 "layers" of F4 on the fishscales.voilenerd wrote: ↑Thu Oct 26, 2023 8:00 amHowdy,

When the snow is sticky, I also drag my skis forward, instead of lifting them up. That way the snow gets pulled off the skis, rather than building up. The same technique seems to work with kick wax, where the amount of lifting vs dragging determines how much grip or glide you have. Before a steep hill, lift and stomp your skis to build up an extra large clump of snow to walk right up the hill, and then drag them again to remove the clump and glide better.
For the tips and tails, I mostly iron on wax nowadays, but I used to use a solid rub-on wax called Zümwax before that, and I still use it sometimes.
You rub the wax from the stick onto the ski (a deodorant like applicator), and then use the cork from the top to rub the wax onto/into the surface of the skis.
It seems to work fairly well in the snow conditions here in New England. It does not last as long as iron-in wax, but it lasts a lot longer than liquid glide wax.

Re: Rub on Wax review
These Dominators sound interesting. We get a lot of snow that lasts well into April and sometimes into May. Problem is, by that time the sun is hot and the air temperature can be in the 50's. Seems perfect for skiing but the wet snow just clings to your skis like a zombie.voilenerd wrote: ↑Thu Oct 26, 2023 8:00 amHowdy,

Can you please explain to a newbie the nuanced difference between the Butter and the Race Rocket? I read what you wrote but can you provide a bit more explanation so I can better differentiate them in my mind? Maybe some practical tips on how you use or layer them, or when you'd pick one over say, Toko Red, would be helpful. Thanks!

On the web site. Butter is highly florinated. Race Rocket is mid florinated.
If you read about what PFCs do to the environment and semi important organs like the liver and kidneys, you won’t use them.

Well you’re misinformed about Dominator. Dominator factory is approved by the EPA. Their floro waxes they remove all the bad stuff that causes problems. Check out their website.Manney wrote: ↑Thu Oct 26, 2023 10:22 amOn the web site. Butter is highly florinated. Race Rocket is mid florinated.

Butter is for very wet snow. If you can clump a snowball together and it drips with water it’s a butter day. I use it for skiing in late spring and early summer when the pass opens up in my area. Works great.
Rocket has some floro in it but you have temp specific bars. It works for all conditions. Better than the eco non floro stuff. But Rocket doesn’t work as well in very wet snow. You need a high floro wax like butter.
With the dominator wax you rub it on from tip to tail. Then use a cork they provide and rub it in. That’s it. It’s a hard wax which is why it lasts all day. Unlike the paste or liquid. I still hot wax my skis but Dominator adds a bit of speed and if I have the wrong hot wax for the day I just supplement with Rocket.
Re: Rub on Wax review
The issue isn’t being misinformed. All the links point to PFOS… C8s, The industry typically refers to these waxes as floro.voilenerd wrote: ↑Thu Oct 26, 2023 2:16 pmWell you’re misinformed about Dominator. Dominator should make it clearer that their formulations are based on C6s, which are not regulated. As for “approved by the EPA” couldn’t find that specific phrase. If you’re talking about the factory… that’s different than a product. Suspect any company handing chemicals these days in the US need some sort of EPA approval on emissions.
Would be surprised if the EPA used that language because it would essentially mean that C6s have been *peoven* safe.

Kudos to them. Would certainly consider them on this basis.
They need to fire the marketing team tho. Putting a “florinated” label on any of their products (except legacy ones being phased out) is a major FAIL that will cost them sales.
Swix still has some floros.. not sure whether it’s legacy products or just old stock at ski shops. Major cringe every time.
