Help with ski width/sidecut/flex on upgrade from 52mm
Help with ski width/sidecut/flex on upgrade from 52mm
I've been skiing telemark for 32 years on long-thin skis with 75mm cable bindings and looking to upgrade to NTN with a more modern ski shape.
On a whim I got some new Scarpa TX Pro boots, but I'm having trouble figuring out where to start looking for skis. I'm thinking outlaw-x bindings (open to suggestions on that too).
My current skis: Fischer Crown 210cm long, 64mm/52mm/62mm with lots of camber and no rocker. Before that: similar Black Diamond Vectors. Leather lace up 75mm boots. Hammerhead bindings.
I'm 188 cm (6'2") 200lbs. I used to be OK at telemark but lately I get to the slopes less often and have trouble keeping up with my 9yo twins who ski alpine. I mostly ski groomers, but love to hit moguls and will grab powder when I can (rare). I ski mostly in Tahoe (California) and occasionally Colorado/Utah/Vancouver.
So I'll be new to NTN (tried it once on some rentals and it seemed pretty good) and new to wider skis with big sidecut.
From what I've read here I think I want skis around 188cm long with around 18m radius sidecut. But I have no idea on width. Probably between 80mm and 100mm? Is that going to be a bigger ramp up than 75mm to NTN? I'm looking for advice on width and stiffness, and suggestions on skis to look at that might work for me. Is it possible to find skis that work well on groomers and do OK in powder, or is that going to be a bad compromise? (Should I just look for groomer/mogul skis since I'll rarely find powder?)
