New guy here want to say hi and ask for Tele advice.

Post by Petrov » Wed Jan 03, 2018 4:23 pm

Hi folks new guy here. Recently got into skiing. Really enjoy cross country skiing but where I like to ski is a LOT of steep slopes and descents, basically constant up and down.
Now I tried this on basic long skinny cross country skis and it is fun and fast they are absolutley worthless for climbing and down hill for me involves trying to go as fast as I can so I can fall and slide well down the rest of the hill :)
I am 5'7" 238 pounds and carry a backpack with me with gear so the cross country ski's are not fun and or stable for me, especially with my bad knee.
I ordered a pair of rossingol BC125s G3 Targa bindings and Scarpa T4 boots. Obviously wont glide as well as my cross country boot set up but should be more stable I hope?
Can you folks make some suggestions for peripheral gear? Waxless ski glide wax? spare parts for bindings?
Any basic do's and dont's?
How does my set up look for a big guy? (well used to be 280 pounds now 238 )

Hey dude, I think you will find that set up much more stable and fun. As far as other gear I would get shorter poles if you don't have adjustable. I don't know what you had for cc but I think you would be happy with something around 120cm.

Peripheral gear? I wasn't happy till I had a snow saw inside the shovel handle, but that's just gear fever and I can't say I find enough cornices to cut to justify it.

What are you using for grip? (I should probably know by now if Rossi BC125 have scales).
Peripherals could include skins but if you're waxing (and you should), having an extra scraper and cork around is useful. Some things seem to get lost right when you're trying to leave. I also get picky about the little bag I carry wax and wax tools in. If you carry a pack for that stuff it can be useful to collect the gear you'll take and keep it in the pack ready to go. Spread it out to dry after a ski and then pack it up again. What you carry (and if you carry spares or avy gear) depends on where you ski, how long, how far.
Peripheral gear might include a good thermos you like. I made a protective tube for mine out of sleeping mat foam--light and keeps it from getting dented. takes up too much room. But a hot drink on the trail is nice. And perhaps essential if you're introducing your kids to skiing (or a gf)--at least it made the difference for mine.

Thanks guys.
Also I have a question, the tele boots such as scarpa T4? are they supposed to be tight/difficult to get into?
They feel tight on my feet but dont seem to cause actual discomfort or rubbing, is that just a function of a "dwonhill" boot?

Tighter boots DH better, generally speaking.

I find that Scarpa feet are narrow feet. I was born with snowshoe feet and can't wear them. But I can wear Lange DH boots on the other hand.
Call it Nordic Freeride

Yeah it feels like my big toe is getting pushed in..
Going to see if the boot breaks in or I am going to have some problems.

Is it a length issue or a width issue? Scarpa's usually have narrow heel pockets but wide-ish foot boxes. What MONDO size do you have?

Scarpas run the SAME shell size on the half and the next up... EX: 26.5 and 27 are the SAME SHELL.

A 27.5 liner will not even fit in the shell.

27.5 and 28 are the next sizes up.

Lowangle-Al-who-now-spells-funny-sometimes has a good question. Are they the newer T4's with an intuition liner?
