NTN binding Comparison - new Outlaw X vs Meidjo 3?

Post by Algreen » Sat Jan 01, 2022 4:16 pm

Howdy all,
Happy owner of Meidjo 3 (with brakes) and Crispi Evo boots. Very much like the feel of M’s with my style of tele skiing (used to ski Bomber Bishops back in the day and find the edge hold comparable).
Looking for a second ski setup for 100% resort skiing. For those familiar with the M3 and newest Outlaw X, what are your thoughts? And if money were no issue, which would you choose?

Thanks!

I have both... They are both awesome bindings, but they have a very different feel on the snow... I much prefer the Meidjo over the Outlaw but this is just me. I tried hard to love the Outlaws but I don't like them very much. For some people, it's the other way around... Buy both and keep the one you like best...? 8-)

Thanks! What type of skiing do you do and do you think each binding is best suited toward?
This is what I just did. Ordered a pair of Atomic Vantage 86 with the Outlaw X to try. If they don’t work, then someone on here will get a good deal and I’ll stick with the Meidjo.

I ski the Meidjo (haven't skied the Outlaw) but have a friend who has skied both. He says he prefers the Outlaw as it can be adjusted to be much more "active".

I got the outlaw X shortly after it came out. I think the Meidjo 2 had just come out, but didn’t have many reviews. At the time I went for the outlaw as it was more durable and I was buying a primarily resort setup that I was going to ride hard. It’s a nice binding. I think if I was doing a lot of touring I would have gotten either the Meidjo or Lynx. The outlaw has brakes, though somewhat awkward to get into at first after a couple tries it’s not too hard. If you use leashes then you won’t have to screw around with it. I know the Meidjo had some issues when it was first released and I bet they were mostly resolved with the 2 and 3. I like a softer action and I have my outlaw dialed way down. It can get really stiff (active) if you want it that way. Back when I was deciding the general consensus was the outlaw was more durable and active. The Meidjo toured better and had a more natural feel to the flex. The lynx came out I think the season after I got my setup with the outlaw x so I never really read up on that one. You might consider the lynx too... especially if you plan to do a lot of skinning for turns. Lynx and Meidjo are probably best NTN option for that. I don’t know if anyone has an off the shelf tele-tech yet, which could be even lighter than Lynx / Meidjo.

Late last season I was faced with the same dilemma and ultimately went with the Meidjo 3. I didn't have the possibility to test either binding, so my choice was influenced what i've seen/read about the Meidjo (Dostie's videos were very informative), my aspiration to do more touring and my gut feeling. That being said, i can't speak fo the outlaws but here's my limited experience on the Meidjos.

Sport Conrad had a good deal on the Salomon QST 92 so bought them together with the Meidjos and a pair of TX Pro's.

Last spring I managed to get three nice tours at a nearby ski resort who had closed for the season. I really liked the touring aspect of the Meidjo and found them quite intuitive to use. I was as fast as my buddies with AT setups and skiing corn snow felt amazing. I ski mine with two springs (regular and the small one) and the screws tightened halwfay. The binding is feels precise and for me it's the right amount of resistance. This season i've mainly skied groomers and really like how the setup works on hard pack snow as well. They've released once for me in a crash so that seems to work as well.

For this season i got the powder box and it was a good upgrade. The binding now collects less snow, no more "loading" of the kick-stand and living in the south of Finland (read no mountains) the low-rise bar is way more useful than the high-rise one.

So far been loving the setup!
