Also wondering if I should go for the 196 or 188 at 6'1" and 172 pounds. I've read the FT62 X are stiffer and one can go longer as compared to the earlier generations of this ski. I'd probably use this ski for 80-90% touring, and 10-20% turning, so I'm thinking 196...But if the 196 is gonna be real tough for a tele noob to learn to turn, perhaps the 188 is the way to go?

Would the new FT62X be a good trail-breaking ski since it's stiffer than previous models?

I can break trail in 12”, that’s as deep as it’s been. I have kicked through drifted areas where the ski disappeared under the surface, but it was fully supportive.
Now when you ask about length that’s a tougher question. While more cambered and stiffer than the previous model, it isn’t a classic double cambered ski. However it can kick and glide, and track on consolidated base. That is something the previous model could not do. Now here’s the rub, because the previous model was soft, your weight was always bending it, so when you rolled the edge it turned. Now the new model has the same shape, and it turns very well, but you need to put it on edge. The new model isn’t as surfy either. It however rewards a more skilled operator by not getting kick around as easy. Bottom line is that it’s a far better all around ski, but that doesn’t mean the original isn’t better at some things.
So back to length, at my 190 lbs I wouldn’t consider shorter. If you were 180, I would say go 196. Unfortunately at 172 all I can say is that I’m not sure. I’m don’t think there would be any difficulty compressing the wax pocket. However will you be able to easily and instantly bend the ski as soon as it turns on edge. It’s not like learning how to focus your kick.
I could be over thinking this. I have not heard anyone else chime in about this ski. If it helps, I ski a 210 Gamme, and a 187 Tindan. Perhaps you have something similar to compare?
I personally don’t think height means a lot, but I’m 5’ 9”.

Regarding height and ski selection, if you look at the Asnes webpage for the FT62x, the ski length chart uses skier height instead of skier weight:

Kroppslengde Skilengde
168-177 cm 172 cm
175-185 cm 180 cm
183-192 cm 188 cm
188+ cm 196 cm

Translating the Norwegian, it states that Falketind should be chosen "close to your own body height." Which would put me on the 188.

So maybe skier height does play an important role given the uniqueness of this ski's design?

@grizz_bait I am guessing Asnes is assuming weight is proportional to height. So, if one is heavier or lighter than “average” they should go up or down in size, accordingly.
Your weight to hight seems pretty normal, so you at 172# and 6’1” / 185cm should probably go for the 188, based on a conventional recommendation.
If you wanted to give up some turning to get better tracking, or wanted better support in deep snow, you might consider the 196. That would be up to you.

Hi @grizz_bait I have the previous gen FT62 in 196 after I sold the same gen FT62 188cm. I did so thinking they would tout better but the difference was marginal and I did lose something for turning. I am 6,1 and around 215 naked. If I had to do it again I would have kept the 188. Don’t know if it would be the same reasoning with the new generation FT62

Thanks for the info. I got a little too excited last night and ordered the 196 before really considering the best length for me. Hopefully I can exchange for the 188, I think that’s probably best for me if I want to learn how to tele on this ski.

Depending on where you ordered them, maybe you can change the order before they ship?

I am a mechanic, I started in precision tooling and went into the building industry. I deal with men, a lot of times what matters is getting things done, we don’t really care about hurting feelings. The ski is a unique design, but it’s still a ski. A ski flexes based upon the forces applied to it. A skiers weight and skill are the biggest factors. A skiers height is irrelevant. However a skier may handle a shorter ski more easily.

PS I think based upon weight the 188 cm would be best for the OP. However I think it’s ridiculous that Asnes only gives length recommendations on the basis of height. When a man works physically for 20 years plus of his life he will not be built like a Euro-model any longer (even if he started that way) Same thought with that athletic sizing, longer sleeves and body used to be called tall. Now you get the longer sleeves, but tight in the chest.

Kinda tempted to just keep the 196 and use it for a deep snow XC ski. I like the idea of learning to telemark turn on this ski, but I’m also concerned that it will be very difficult and frustrating. I’m bone-headed and love a good challenge, but is this the right ski to learn tele turns on? I guess that’s a personal question I’ll have to answer on my own, but I’d appreciate some realistic perspectives from the wisened elders here. Luckily, I live in the Northern Rockies and conditions are often quite good for this kind of ski. As always, thanks for taking the time!
