Why is it so alone? I'm guessing it's an erratic, but here in New England there are erratics everywhere, not solo ones dreaming long dreams on gentle hills. I wonder what the geologic explanation is.

This geologist here suggests, that the rock stated put due to the flatter nature of the peak top, whereas any erratics deposited on the slopes were transported down due to a variety of slope processes. Freezing and thawing of underlying soil can do that.Woodserson wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 8:18 pmWhy is it so alone? But a clearer hypothesis could be made from pictures taken without snow cover

I saw a car sized boulder tumble down a 40 degree slope for no apparent reason one time.
I doubt it was a glacier erratic though.
It's not unusual to see large glacier erratic boulders sitting by themselves, unlike glacial morrains, like the one a few hundred yards from my house in Pa. that is a pile of smaller rocks.

It was quite startling to see it in these gentle hills, it was also the first sunny day in about 8! A beautiful stage.

Unfortunately this was the best shot I could get since my camera was in my pulk and I only had access to my phone.randoskier wrote: ↑Thu Mar 17, 2022 4:44 pmI will get a pic next summer if fish on the Navassvatnet.Roelant wrote: ↑Thu Mar 17, 2022 3:12 amThis geologist here suggests, that the rock stated put due to the flatter nature of the peak top, whereas any erratics deposited on the slopes were transported down due to a variety of slope processes. Re: Pictures, pictures and pictures!
stoked! got here last night. heading up to Solitude tonight.
even the view from the Target parking lot is epic. apologies to those folks who are fortunate enough to live here and see these views every day. the peak behind the shopping mall is 10x the height of the "mountain" in my backyard. so yup, I'm stoked to be here.

Last week was a nice spring week here in southern Finland. Got to do everything from a overnight trip with my new diy pulk to getting sendy at the local park.

banner day at the Seabrook, New Hampshire goodwill store yesterday while my car was being worked on - scored a new coffee cup with a panoramic photo of Tuckerman Ravine and a 70's Chick Corea/Stanley Clarke album!
