Musk Ox's WONDERFUL WORLD OF SNOW: SNOWFACTS

Post by Musk Ox » Tue Aug 29, 2023 8:18 am

Does anyone know snow like a musk ox knows?

NO! No one knows the snows like a woolly thing knows the snows.

So join me on a journey into the heart of the cold white stuff we call "SNOW."

Welcome, friends, to
MUSK OX’S SNOWFACTS

Everyone has some basic snow knowledge.

The average mammal is made of 93% water, which is a form of latent or 'untransformed' snow.

We are, in other words, nearly 2/3s snow.

Polar bears even resemble snow.

But how do we get from this –

Image

to this?

Image

The answer may surprise you.

It’s SNOW.

This is snow.

Image

Snow is white.

This is a close-up of snow.

Image

The closer we get to snow, the whiter it becomes.

Image
FUN FACT: it is this property that makes snow taxonomically closer to a Norwegian breakfast than any other substance on Earth.

Snow is made from frozen water.

Water freezes at 0° Centigrade, or 58° Fahrenheit (probably, I have no idea what those numbers mean, circumpolar mammals are metric).

When water freezes, it turns into snow. It acquires its characteristic white colour from the diffraction of light crystals, scattered by snow radiation given off from the solid water as “snowbeams”.

Next we’ll will take about polar bears.

This is the Democratic People’s Republic of Svalbard, on the archipelago of Norway.

Image

As you can see, it is largely made of snow.

This is why the indigenous people of Svalbard have five hundred words for snow. Every one of these words is the same – “Snow.”

You know what else is white?

Polar bears.

Yes – polar bears.

Fuck those guys.

Do you know why polar bears are white?

Because it is easier for them to hide in snow.

Can you see the polar bear in this picture?

Image
I bet you can’t.

What if we zoom in?

Image

How about now? Can you see the polar bear now?

Image

Fuck those guys.

What about now?

Image

What about now?

Image

We are now inside the polar bear!

Image

The internal organs of the polar bear are MADE FROM SNOW.

It is this extraordinary fact that has led to an entire line of ski accessories being named after them: POLAR BEAR WAX.

Next we will talk about snow.

When snow falls from the sky, it usually falls as crystals of snow, known as ‘snow’.

This a crystal of NEW snow in the laboratory microscope in my snowlab.

Image
It’s really edgy. See how edgy it is.

After a day on the hill or mountain, the snow crystal gets bored and turns into another kind of snow crystal. This snow crystal is known is a “snow crystal,” or “snowflake.”

This is a crystal of PAST IT snow in my laboratory microscope in my snowlab.

Image
It’s a bit less ‘edgy’, but it is, nevertheless, still a flake of snow.

Some snow falls metaphorically green.

Image
Some snow falls ontologically blue.

Image
Some snow falls happy-go-luckily red-silver, but I can’t be bothered to show you this.

Some snow falls supremely white. This is the most white kind of snow. Polar white. This kind of snow is the closest substance on earth to a Republican presidential candidate debate.

Next we will talk more about snow.

All I see here are some amazing folds in Cretaceous limestone, gorgeously emphasized by the snow (or the herds of swiss Polar bears on the Sichelchamm).

You know what else is white?

Polar bears.

While I hate to interrupt the routine, this does obscure my favorite polar bear fact—they are, in fact, not white. They have black skin and transparent fur! The white look is due to ray scattering.

But what else is actually transparent and appears white due to ray scattering?

Frozen water… which means…

Snow is transparent, but appears white…

Wait, are polar bears actually made of snow?

There was no need to go there, seriously.

Bot since you did...

Here's another fun fact. A polar bear will scatter a herd of musk oxen.

Scatter, scatter, scatter.

Even if there is just one musk ox, a polar bear will do the same.

Scatter, scatter, scatter.

Another fun fact. Cold makes thinking harder.

In fact (yes, a fact in-fact), that's where "snowblow your mind" comes from, because for all mammals (inqaluiting musk ox too) at -40° thinking is so hard they can't tell the difference between Fahrenheit or Centigrade!

Yes, I know, I went there, celsius-ly!

And when, they are, not in fact?

They are, in sane, not right.
