The snow was wild today. We had some new snowfall while I was gone for Christmas, and there must have been a bunch of wind and sun having its way with the new snow. Touring across some meadows, I encountered breakable crust, super firm unbreakable crust, and knee deep powder (in my s-bound 98s), all within a 100 yards. Going downhill was a wild guess. At one point, I was side slipping down chalkboard crust for a few feet until I suddenly slipped into a knee-deep, crust-less powder drift. Or cruising through consolidated powder until my shins suddenly rammed into a thick crust sending me over the handlebars. It's like mother nature sent a whirlwind through the area, redistributing powder in random stashes and forming crust everywhere else.

That breakable crust sends my tips up and my tails down at an angle that fishcales can't deal with and kicker skins struggle with. I wished I had packed my full length skins even for the flats.

"Variable" snow conditions.

Found some nice snow up near Red Mountain Pass. Does anyone know what caused these little lumps on top of the snow? This is powder that's been sitting around for over a week with moderate sun exposure.

Put some old NNNBC bindings I had on my Hoks using the AltaiSki adapter plates. I ski 3 pin but my rock skiing buddy is on NNNNBC and wanted to give them a try on some crusty hiking trails. I think he’s gonna do some bushwhacking too.

A little bit of fresh snow last night in NW Wyoming and I was able to find some amazing snow on NE facing slopes today. I was skiing the SBound 98's / Vista combo. Just don't look over the hill as there is still plenty of sagebrush and marginal snow on the SE aspects. It looks like other parts of the country might get some great snow over the next few weeks, so hang in there everyone.

Down here in the San Juans we've had a weak winter but I was also able to find some really nice snow on north facing slopes.

We have a huge storm cycle rolling in right about now though!

One heck of a storm blew through yesterday. Probably not a good day to ski Mt. Coffin.

We did get a short break today and I took the Objectives / Alfa Free's out for a spin.
